Yeats loved Irish legends and stories and this poem was inspired by a 14th Century poem by an anonymous author. The first stanza from which this phrase is taken reads: 'I am of Ireland, And the Holy Land of Ireland, And time runs on, cried she. Come out of charity, Come dance with me in Ireland. Yeats, an Irish poet and the first Irishman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, was a driving force in the Irish Literary Revival, He, among others, founded the Abbey Theater in Dublin where he remained active for many years.
