Michael Cardew (1901-1983)

Michael Cardew was the primary apprentice at the Leach Pottery, St Ives, Cornwall, in 1923, working with the legendary founder, Bernard Leach. In 1926 he left Leach to reestablish the old pottery at Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire to pursue his passion for earthenware. In 1939 Cardew set up another pottery at Wenford Bridge but the war disrupted his plans. In 1942 during the war, Cardew first went to Ghana as a pottery instructor and later set up the Pottery Training Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. He remained in West Africa for long periods until his retirement in 1965 helping to develop stoneware using local materials.  His later work is strongly influenced by his African experience. This is one of those pieces - a chalice form vase by Michael Cardew, with impressed potter's seal as well as Wenford Bridge pottery seal. Glazed with Tenmoku and galena. Glazes. It is in pristine condition.
