Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The decoration is formed by first adding small decorative compartments (cloisons in French) to the metal object by soldering or gluing wires or thin strips placed on their edges. The individual compartments are filled with an enamel or glass powder, which is then fired to high temperatures in a kiln. The surface is then ground and polished, which allows the cloisons to remain visible in the finished piece. These cloisons separate the different compartments of the enamel and create a unique surface decorative treatment. It is a very exacting and time consuming process.
