Curtis Botanical Plate #154

The Botanical Magazine published May 1, 1794.
Sales price: $625.00
Description Original hand colored copper plate engraving presented in a Walnut and walnut burl hicks style frame with bronze roundels and Spanish suede mount. Image H-8" X W-5" Frame H-17.5" X W-14" This original copper-plate engraving was hand colored at the time of publication. The image is from The Botanical Magazine, founded in 1787 by William Curtis. Curtis (1746-1799) was born in Alton, Hampshire, England. The first edition was published on February 1, 1787 and contained three plates. Three thousand copies were sold at one shilling each. William Kilburn and James Sowerby joined the following year along with Sydenham Edwards. These three men were responsible for almost all of the illustrations for the next 28 years - most of them being by Edwards, with Sansom as engraver. After 1815, when Edwards severed his connection with the publication, John Curtis and William Herbert were among the various artists who provided the drawings until the advent of William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), who took over direction and illustration in 1826.
